NCC says new broadband will improve economy

The Nigerian Communication Commission has said the newly introduced broadband network will contribute to the growth of the Nigerian economy.
The Executive Commissioner, Stakeholders’ Management, Mr. Okechukwu Itanyi, said this in Calabar, Cross River State, at the 65th edition of Consumer Outreach Programme.
Itanyi said that the programme, themed, ‘The benefits of broadband to the consumers’, was designed to inform the consumers of the latest innovation by the commission.
“We are here to highlight the benefits of broadband to the telecoms consumers, including the way Information Communication Technology can promote a higher quality of life on a day to day basis,” Itanyi said.
According to him, broadband has a multi-sectoral benefits having relevance to education,
healthcare, public safety, emergency response, among others.

Itanyi, who was represented by the Deputy Director, Consumer Affairs, Dr. Femi Atoyebi, said a good broadband connection in any home had the capacity to send data far more quickly to the computer.
He cautioned families against misuse of broadband, saying that it contains many input devices that could be used for different purposes.
Speaking, the Cross River Commissioner for Information, Mr. Akin Ricketts, advised telecom operators to improve their services in order to justify the Subscribers’ confidence.
“All I want to ask is that the service providers should improve their services. They have to justify the confidence of subscribers,” he said.
He said that some of the service providers had done well by partnering the state during its annual carnival but added that, there was the need for them to up their services.
Ricketts said that the state government was not prepared to give out land free of charge to investors who were out to make money.
During the interactive session, subscribers used the opportunity to ask some pertinent questions including poor network, unsolicited messages and high service charges.
All the leading network providers were represented at the occasion including MTN, Etisalat, Glo, Airtel and Visafone.
The NCC said that all complaints by the consumers would be addressed as soon as possible.
