WHO declares Nigeria guinea-worm free

THE World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared Nigeria guinea-worm free with effect from last year.
Already, the global health body has issued the country with a certificate to confirm the development.
Health Minister, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, while presenting the certificate signed by the Director-General of WHO, Dr. Margaret Chang, before the commencement of Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in Abuja yesterday, attributed the positive development to the renewed zeal and political commitment demonstrated by the President Jonathan administration in the provision of the necessary wherewithal towards eradicating the disease.
An elated Jonathan described the development as epoch-making, especially coming at a time that the country was celebrating its centenary anniversary.
According to him, “We are specially delighted that this milestone coincides with the period we are marking our centenary as a nation. It is certainly a centenary gift to this country. The certification by WHO is a global recognition of how far we have come and the success of the work that has been done to rid our nation of this scourge.”
